Hi, I’m Daniel Horne

Brisbane-based designer/maker with an Australian and Japanese background. Education - QUT design graduate with a key focus on Human-Centred Design.

Maker experience - 5 years developing woodwork skills and 1 year learning fine woodwork under a master designer/maker.

Early life - Growing up with an Australian father and Japanese mother has developed a unique perspective and skills that I now see as my greatest strength. I grew up with no one who looked like me, no community or identity I could easily fit into, and culturally, these two couldn’t be more different. You can not help but develop a strong compassion for others and empathy to navigate life in this situation. For a designer, this ability to see people would be my gift.

My key design influences
George Nakashima, Shigeki Matsuoka, Jeremy Lee & Ferréol Babin.

My Approach

“I’m not interested in making a piece of furniture that connects to your wifi, checks your weight and gives you a meal plan”

The design is only as good as the questions you ask to get there.

My approach - Human-Centred Design

I need to get to know you, the context and your values in an initial consult. Rarely do people come to me knowing exactly what they want, and this shouldn’t be a reason not to reach out. Let’s work together on this and find your genuine desires.

You
Your top 10 needs from this piece.
Then it’s time to get brutal.
If you could only have 3 things on this list, what would they be?

Context
Ideally, I’d like to walk in the space it will reside in.
If this is too difficult, video or photos of the space can help to get a feeling of the colour palette, lighting, and other objects in the space. Let me know how you’d prefer to use this object? Who else is likely to use the piece? What do you currently use, and how does that fall short?

Values
Let’s align our values.
If you like Shizen design philosophy with a focus on natural forms and how they meld with us. Well then, I’m excited to create your piece. And, if I’m excited by the project, it’s incredible what can be made.

Simple ideas

Clear concepts lift the spirit.
Complex concepts are a burden.

Let’s be clear.

Lasting impact

Cultivate naturalness in your home.
Carry it with you when you leave.
